Lorry driver killed in collision on A141 identified as March man

Police have identified a man from March who was killed in a crash between two lorries on the A141 at Hartford yesterday (Tuesday).

Phil Asplin, 59, of Cedar Close, March, suffered fatal injuries after the lorry he was driving collided with another HGV and instantly caught fire just after 2.30pm.

The second lorry caught fire a short while after, however the driver, a 23-year-old man from Hornchurch, Romford, Essex, managed to escape although suffered serious but not life threatening injuries.

The fire caused serious damage to the road therefore extensive work will be carried out over the next 24 hours to repair the surface. Diversions have been put in place while the work is completed.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either of the vehicles leading up to the moments before the incident.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue said a call was made at 2.25pm after a crash between two heavy goods vehicles and a van. He added one HGV was turned on its side and on fire. The fire then spread to the other lorry.

Fire engines from Huntingdon, St Ives, St Neots, Cottenham, Ramsey and Chatteris are on the scene.
