St Leonard’s Church in Leverington has suffered at the hands of vandals prompting the vicar to call for those responsible to take a step back and do something constructive instead.

Rev Sandra Gardner said: “This lovely old church has stood in the centre of the village since the 12th century and over the centuries the villagers must have given time, love and donations to keep it going - a wonderful testament to local people.

“Those attacking this lovely old building should be ashamed of themselves.

“If they are bored why don’t they pick up some litter?”

The church has had notices pulled down, rocks thrown through the old windows and signs destroyed.

Rev Gardner said: “The ancestors of these vandals were probably baptised, went to Sunday School, were married and are now buried in the church yard.

“How ashamed they would be to know what is going on.”

The Gorefield Road building is thought to be one of the finest historic churches in the county according to the St Leonard’s website and has a long history.

There is evidence that a wooden church was built there by about 850 after the original Viking invaders converted to Christianity.

It is thought that a stone church was built on the site around 1150.
