More than 190 people packed into the church of St Peter and St Paul for Wisbech’s annual Last Night of the Proms.

With the theme of the ‘swinging 60s’ the night delivered an outpouring of flag-waving and foot-stomping to music from the King’s Lynn Town Band.

Church warden Trevor Wright, who hosted the event, said: “I can’t praise the King’s Lynn Town Band enough; they were amazing and played some great songs.

“I just want to thank everyone for coming to this year’s event. We rely on everyone’s support and have made £1,360 profit.

“Music is what we’re used to; it’s all about making use of the community space that we have to offer.

“It [the event] brings the community together. They all had a great time and no one came up to me to say they didn’t enjoy themselves.”

Following an inspection it was discovered that more than half-a-million pounds would be needed to pay for structural works at the historical building.

Mr Wright added: “The church has a lovely auditorium and great acoustics. We recently had our rock choir come in and we’re looking for more arts opportunities for the future.

“The event does appeal to a more senior audience; the sound of a brass band doesn’t really ring with younger people. But we do try to play more popular music.”
