There was a landslide victory for Joanne Rose when a by-election was called because the previous parish councillor did not turn up to meetings for six months.

Mum of two and newly elected Wimblington parish councillor Rose won her seat after getting 177 votes out of a total of 249.

The by-election was called because Cllr Andy Swinden had not attended for six months for family reasons, business and other life commitments and said he could not guarantee attending meetings in the future.

Cllr Rose, who chairs the village fun day committee, said: “My interest in helping and being part of the local community grew more when I became involved in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in 2012 and since then I’ve become involved in the annual fun day event.

“My family and I feel that we get a lot out of living in Wimblington and joining the parish council is another way of giving something back.

“I care about the everyday things like street lighting and refuse disposal. Making our villages safe and secure. If the pavement needs repair and verges need to be trimmed, I want be sure it gets done. I care about our village hall, and how it is used.”

She stood against James Waterman who received 72 votes. The number of voters who turned out in the village was 14 per cent.

“It is important to create a safe and happy environment for my own children and the other children in the village to play and thrive in. It is important that the elderly are cared for and given the respect they deserve,“ said Cllr Rose.
