Ayelsby House: Red lines indicate the shutters to be removed

Documentary evidence has been put to Fenland planners to show that shutters on a listed house were not part of the original building.

Steve Bevan has put together photos of the house through the years in a bid to have the shutters- which are rotting away- to be removed.

“The shutters are not an original feature of the property,” says Mr Bevan. “The current state of the shutters is supportive of our belief that removal is warranted and replacement is not required.”

Mr Bevan owns Ayelsby House in Wenny Road, Chatteris, and his photographs show the grade II listed house did not appear to have shutters when it was built.

“They are purely decorative, being screwed to the wall and making them inoperable,” he says.

He said the house had been empty for four or five years when he bought it last September and he is renovating it as a family home.

Mr Bevan says he wishes, as far as practicable, to maintain the original features but to remove “later additions which detract from the original character of the house. The external shutters clearly fall into this category.”

He said the shutters were present when the house was listed in the 1980s but earlier photos taken in 1960 are evidence “that the shutters are not an original feature”. The 1960 photos show the external faces of the property to be without shutters.

He has also forwarded planners the only photo he could find from 1918 and from the Chatteris historical archive which is inconclusive since the entire property was covered in ivy. If the shutters did exist at that time they would have been inoperable anyway because of the ivy, he says.

Fenland planners will now decide if the shutters can be removed.
