THE post box painted gold in honour of Jonnie Peacock’s London 2012 heroics is to become a permanent fixture in Doddington.

Royal Mail confirmed today that the 110 post boxes given a paint-job to celebrate the gold medals of our Olympians and Paralympians would not be re-painted red.

Amputee sprinting sensation Peacock became Doddington’s golden boy in September when he stormed to victory in the T44 100m.

Days after his triumph, Doddington turned out in force to watch as the village post box was given a golden paint-job.

Royal Mail has announced that, not only will the post boxes remain gold, but they will also feature a plaque to detail the athlete’s achievements.

It is the first time in Royal Mail’s history that its iconic post boxes will be left a different colour.

Moya Greene, from the Royal Mail Group, said; “We are delighted at the way people took to this simple idea.

“The gold post boxes gave communities even more opportunity to mark the successes of Team GB and Paralympics GB - and became a part of local celebrations of London 2012 across the UK.

“I am pleased to confirm that these post boxes will be kept gold permanently.”
