Thirty German tourists spent three days sampling Fen culture during a twinning trip to Fenland.

The group, from the district of Nettetal, had a day out in Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds, including a visit to the National Stud, enjoyed a dinner dance at Childers Sports and Social Club in Whittlesey and tucked into a hog roast at Gorefield community hall.

The visit was organised by Fenland District Council and the Fenland Twinning Association.

Council chairman Ken Mayor, who hosted a reception at Fenland Hall and the dinner-dance, said: “As always, it was a pleasure to welcome our friends from Nettetal.

“I’m delighted we were able to give them a good time and maintain the close links we have built up with them.

“We look forward to meeting up with them again over in Germany in two years’ time.”

Vanessa Langer, who was the guest of Tom and Lesley Kennedy in Manea, said: “We were all very happy to be part of the twinning. It was really great to stay with Tom and Lesley. We had a lot of fun and I felt like I was at home.

“We want to stay in touch and I’m thinking about visiting them again in August. That’s what the twinning is for, isn’t it?”

Mrs Kennedy said: “It was the first time we had been involved in the twinning and it was an absolute pleasure. It’s a lovely idea – strangers getting together and getting on so well – and the whole atmosphere was really nice.”
