Students at Wisbech Grammar School have been celebrating top-class GCSE examination results.

Ninety-nine per cent of pupils gained five or more passes at GCSE, while standout performances came from 27 students who obtained five or more passes at the top two grades – A* and A. Nine of the year group collected nine or more passes at A* and A.

Headmaster Chris Staley said: “I am very encouraged by the results this year, even though the news today was that there would be some volatility due to the Gove effect.

“This success lays a firm foundation for sixth form study and for looking forward to results in two years’ time.”

Laura Harriman, from March, who added nine A* passes to the A* she gained in mathematics a year ago, said: “I did way better than I thought. I have been so nervous on the way into school and it is such a relief to end it.”

Jo Slipper, who lives in Terrington St Clement, notched up eight A*s and two As. She said: “I have done better than I thought and I am very happy with these results.”

Jasmine Clench, from Wimblington, who gained eight A*s and an A in additional mathematics in addition to the A* she had received in mathematics last year, said she was surprised because she feared she had not performed well enough in some of the subjects.

And Nicholas Rayns, who lives in Chatteris, said he was pleasantly surprised with the tally of six A*s and an A that he had amassed.

Edd Page, from Wisbech, was awarded four A*s and five As, and said that he was happy with his achievement, but he was glad it was all over.
