OSCARS were handed out to pupils who excelled in various disciplines at a special black-tie event at West Walton Community Primary School on Friday.

The ceremony marked the end of the school’s 5th Annual Literacy Festival, which began on January 28.

Geoffrey Wareham, the Mayor of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, was on hand to hand out awards.

During the festival authors visited the school to carry out storytelling workshops with the children, while drama groups came along to help them come up with plots.

Awards were handed out for best character, best storyteller, best setting, best plot and best overall work.

The year-group winners in the best overall category were Rosie (Year 1), Aiden (Year 2), Erin (Year 3), James (Year 4), Dawn (Year 5) and Kieran (Year 6).

Felicity Walsh, the school’s business manager, said the festival was one of the highlights of the school year.

She said: “Everybody dressed up in Oscar attire. The pupils loved it. The comment this year was that this was the best year ever and allocating the Oscars was extremely difficult.

“At the school we have a sharp focus on reading and writing so events like this help promote that.”
