Large crowds came to admire the trees, which were decorated by local groups, societies and individuals and took pride of place in St Peter’s Church.

Visitors voted for their favourite trees, with prizes awarded to the best adult and child entry.

The adult prize went to FACET, while Westwood Community Junior School claimed the honours in the child category.

There was also a prize draw, stalls and refreshments.

There was standing room only on Friday night for the mayor’s civic service, which included contributions from Cavalry Primary School, Burrowmoor primary School and Westwood school.

The festival ended with a Christingle service, where all the trees were lit in the background.

The event raised in the region of £2,500, which will be put towards the church roof.

Revd Jenny Webb said: “We must have had thousands of people passing through the church over the weekend.

“It’s a big effort to organise but it is always worth it, especially when you see the Christmas trees lit up and the children are holding their Christingles.”
