The man who has been a familiar face promoting Fenland’s markets is expected to lose his job as a result of the latest round of redundancies by the district council.

Mike Chapman, markets and events manager, is thought to have been a casualty of the council’s decision to review three separate departments to save costs.

Mr Chapman, currently involved in staging the annual St George’s Day market in March, has emailed local groups to tell them of forthcoming events.

“But this might be the last time I can inform you of these events as I may well be redundant in about eight weeks,” he told one group.

A confidential report on the latest round of proposed redundancies at Fenland Council was considered by its staff committee last month.

Mr Chapman is part of the streetscene, markets and events and open spaces team and councillors agreed “the approach contained in the confidential report”.

  • Mike chapman will be so very missed!! He has worked so hard for Fenland council organising all of the various markets and events in the Fenland area. Always there early morning 5am till the end. So sad will be very hard to fill his shoes. Good luck Mike Chapman

  • That will be a very sad day, end of an era ... shame that dedication is going to be ignored in the name of progress ... what a huge loss to the community. Mike has so much knowledge and so many contacts and there all stored in his own personal filing system ... his head. Good luck in whatever you decide to do Mike and keep in touch x
