Road safety, protecting the environment and the dangers of the internet were some of the messages shared with more than 500 children in a series of workshops.

A total of 14 schools in and around March, Chatteris and Whittlesey took part in the Safety Zone events run by the Fenland Community Safety Partnership.

The events are organised by Fenland District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council with help from police, the fire service and Circle Roddons.

Councillor David Oliver, Fenland Council cabinet member responsible for community safety, stressed the scheme’s value after visiting one of last month’s events.

He joined children from Burrowmoor Primary School, in March, at the town’s fire station as they played Get Home Safely, a board game highlighting different kinds of danger and anti-social behaviour and their possible consequences.

He also took part in an exercise showing what to do in the event of a fire.

Cllr Oliver said: “These were serious lessons but it was obvious that the children had great fun as well. That makes it much more likely that the messages sink in and not only that – it means they will probably pass them on to their parents, too.”

Another Safety Zone series will be held for schools in the Wisbech area in the summer.
