Ely resident Will Law is launching a self-funded initiative to help people become vegetarian in 2016.
Will, a student at Sussex University, has launched Veguary:Ely, a campaign to encourage local residents to switch to a plant-based diet for February 2016 by ‘pledging’ to go vegetarian or vegan.
Cambridgeshire residents can pledge at www.veguaryely.co.uk before Sunday January 17 to be entered into a free prize draw to win a selection of luxury vegan food.
Pledgers will receive a free welcome pack in the post, exclusive recipes, and offers on vegan options from participating local restaurants in the area for the month.
Will, who has previously campaigned against fast food outlets coming to the city’s new leisure complex, said: “Choosing a plant-based diet is the best way to live a cruelty-free, environmentally friendly, and healthier life. It’s understandably a big change to make with the busy lives we all lead, but this campaign aims to make that change as easy as possible.
“We are constantly exposed to reasons why we should consume animal products through powerful adverts and the media, but there are so many more reasons to choose a plant-based diet instead: health benefits, saving money, lots of tasty recipes, an awareness of what really goes into the food on our plates and with more options being added in shops and restaurants every day, there has never been a better time to switch to a more compassionate lifestyle.
“I decided to stop consuming animal products when I realised the cruelty that I was unknowingly funding by doing so, and the enormous impact of animal agriculture on the environment that I was indirectly contributing to.”
He continued: “The campaign is strictly not-for-profit, although I hope its success will lead to it becoming financially self-sufficient in the future, with the aim of fundraising alongside the campaign to raise money for a local animal sanctuary.”
Local food outlets have been invited to take part in the campaign by offering new vegan options for February, with an exclusive special discount emailed to Veguary:Ely pledgers.
The hamper will include a luxury selection of vegan food, as well as a T-shirt and a ‘Vegan Food & Living’ magazine.
The website for the campaign can be viewed at: https://www.veguaryely.co.uk and is also on Facebook ‘Veguary:Ely’ and Twitter ‘@VeguaryEly’
