A learning disability charity with a branch in Fenland has changed its name as part of plans to make fund-raising efforts more effective.

Cambridgeshire Mencap has been divided into two charities – the Edmund Trust and Eddie’s.

Both organisations will continue to work across Cambridgeshire from offices in March and Fulbourn.

Lyn Jenkins, general manager of the charities, said: “Becoming two separate charities was necessary to enable us to fund-raise more effectively in the current financial climate.

“We also felt the time was right to leave the Mencap name behind.

“We have always operated independently, serving and supporting local people, and now feel that is much clearer to the service users, volunteers and stakeholders.”

The new names were chosen after the first Cambridge Mencap residence which was called Edmund house.

The Edmund Trust will provide supported living and respite care, as well as training services.

Eddie’s will provide practical support for children, young people and adults with learning disabilities, their families and carers, as well as a befriending service.
