A March mum, who won three trophies in a prestigious national bikini competition, is dedicating one of them to a war hero who inspired her to pick up the pieces of her life with positivity when she was at one of her lowest points.
Debbie Diablo Smith, 39, said that walking away with the cabinet silverware in Miami Pro proved to be a gruelling challenge but one that earned her the right to compete in the future as a professional athlete.
Now she wants to thank the war veteran who set her on her new life pathway to fund raising for Help For Heroes and a catalogue of crazy challenges that followed.
Debbie said: “Some years ago I was in a bad place. I read a book about a soldier called Martyn Compton who had his face blown off in Afghanistan.
“Despite horrendous circumstances he got on with his life in the face of such adversity, he was an inspiration to me.
“He proved that no matter how bad things get you can get through.
“It taught me that when you’re low somebody else can give you inspiration and that the impossible is possible.
“It was him that inspired me to start fund raising for Help For Heroes and set me on my pathway of all the crazy challenges like my 1,000 mile bike ride in Vietnam and the Big Battlefield Paris to London 420 mile cycle challenge.
“The latest is the hardest challenge to date as not only was I training hard but I was eating barely anything, the exhaustion and mind fog of that was something else.
“I worried I became so boring! I didn’t celebrate Christmas or birthdays or do normal stuff for 18 months because I was in training.
“The first thing I did when it was over was have champagne and chocolates!”
Categories in which Debbie won a trophy are:
• Fourth in the over 35s fitness.
• Third in the over 35s bikini model section. This win earned her the Miami Pro professional athlete card.
• Fifth in the Fit Mums of all ages category.
Debbie’s next event will be taking part in a 1940s styled Poppy pin-up calendar for the charity, Veterans For life.
