A family, who said a disabled bathroom conversion by a local tradesman looked like a five year old had done it, have been rescued by a charity who have paid to fix the mess.
Earlier this year we told how a young woman paid out more than £2,000 to Chatteris businessman Les Crofts for a bathroom conversion for her brother, injured during service in the armed forces.
But it was such a mess she said it would cost around £4,500 to fix it. Since then, a military charity has stepped in to put the bathroom right with the help of building firm NuRoomz.
Her brother can now enjoy easy access to a proper disabled friendly bathroom.
The woman, who asked not to be named, said: “I can’t tell you the relief. The bathroom has now been done to a high standard.
“My brother was a corporal in the army for 23 years and served in Iraq, Canada, Bosnia.
“He was injured on duty and medically retired.
“He came to live with me and I wanted to have the conversion for him – Les nearly took that opportunity away from us – I had no money to fix the mess he left us in,” she said.
Les was the man behind the doomed Jumbos Jungle children’s play centre for Chatteris and was responsible for a series of failed enterprises including building and electrical work and running an on-line trading company.
Crofts is believed to have since closed his Chatteris firm and is said to be working in the Earith area under the name of Michael Lynch and trading under a new name, Car Commercials Earith, which he is advertising on eBay.
In the case of the bathroom the woman said that Les took on the work and sub contracted it to another person who made it look “like a five-year-old had done it. Tiles were wonky, some bulged out.
“I could cut myself on one side as there’s no edging,” the woman said.
The electrics were not safe, there was no RCD breaker, she added.
The woman paid money in advance, but gave up trying to press Les for a refund.
