Weeks after moving into a vacant shop in Wisbech, Burger King has applied to extend its opening hours to 11pm daily instead of closing at 7pm.

The company took over the empty Horsefair site once the home of Dorothy Perkins and Burton but planners imposed an early closing time.

Now Burger King is hoping to have that restriction removed – put there to “safeguard the amenities currently enjoyed by the occupants of adjoining premises”.

Amy Jones, development officer for G L Hearn – the landlord’s agents- said Fenland Council had been contacted about the extended hours “but at the time of submission of this application we had not received any comment back from officers”.

Ms Jones compared Burger King to six other local restaurants including the Rose and Crown (bookings till 9pm), The Moghul (open till 11pm) and Ernie’s Place (open till 10pm).

She said these and many others operate similar hours to those proposed for Burger King and a number of other takeaways even stayed open till 2am.

She said the current opening hours would have been acceptable to a café style operator and staying open later would not have a negative affect.

  • In this day and age where stores are open day and night I think a 7pm restriction is harsh. It might be different if Burger King were in a predominantly residential area but it isn't. It's in a shopping centre in the middle of Wisbech where there are many other food outlets that stay open until 11pm and later.
