ALL 14 members of the planning committee of Fenland District Council are to be stood down next week in a massive fall out in the wake of supermarket-gate.
Most can apply to return but for some – including Councillor Jan French and Councillor Martin Curtis there will be no way back.
Council leader Alan Melton who had promised to “clear out any mischief makers” appeared to signal he felt Cllr French was among that group by not only removing her from the committee but sacking her from his Cabinet.
He also removed Cllr Curtis, the Whittlesey member who had stood aside to fight for Sainsbury’s. Cllr Melton believes Cllr Curtis, like Cllr French, has over stepped the mark and insists both must go.
On Tuesday the Cambs Times, with Editor John Elworthy in the chair will host a public meeting at 6.30pm at the Ivy Leaf club, Whittlesey, to debate supermarket-gate.
Sainsbury’s and Tesco have been asked to send representatives but the evening will be about our readers and their thoughts and opinions.

Whittlesey councillors (Laws and Curtis) on dashing white chargers saving us from evil Tesco? Sickening! It was Whittlesey councillors who were behind the approval for the ridiculous site on Station Road. That is where this pantomime started. They should go.

IanF - your comments do not do justice to Laurel and Hardy. TIme is running out for those protecting councillors from their past " indiscretions". The BBC has developed recent expertise into investigating certain types of indiscretion , perhaps they can be called on to illuminate the activities of some of Fenland's finest.

Well, what can I say? It appears that the only one to come out of this with any decency is Cllr. Curtis - who has also been sacked for standing up for what the people of Whittlesey wanted!! We now have a Mayor of March (who has been sacked from FDC's Cabinet due to certain "indiscretions" (allegedly)), a number of (now former) planning committee members who must surely have difficulty looking at their faces in the mirror - Janus the two headed two faced God comes to mind - and almost certainly Tesco suing FDC for (currently) refusing their application. As a result of this almightly mess, our (and by our I mean EVERYONE in Fenland rather than just Whittlesey people) will almost certainly face higher Council Tax charges in the coming years (to pay for the almost inevitable financial claims made by Tesco Sainsbury's for loss of income). Well done FDC. Laurel and Hardy couldn't have done it better.
