TRANSPORT manager David Johnson is used to organising deliveries – but he made a very special one last Thursday.

That’s because his baby son was born in the front seat of his Vauxhall Vectra on a garage forecourt.

David, from Chatteris, was driving his wife Donna to hospital when her contractions got so strong that it was quite obvious baby Edward couldn’t wait any longer to make his entry into the world.

David said: “Donna said we had to stop the car on the outskirts of Warboys. Zoe, Donna’s 17-year-old daughter, was in the car with us and she called for an ambulance.

“I used Zoe’s phone to speak to a woman from the ambulance service and she talked us through everything.

“She asked what I could see and told me to keep calm. She was brilliant, giving me instructions and I did everything she said.

“When I said the baby’s head was showing, she said Donna should push ... and Edward was born.

“We left home at 6.16pm and he arrived at 6.31pm, weighing 8lb 4oz.

“It was very emotional and I was very tearful. But the woman on the phone was so calm and collected, she gave me confidence.

“Donna was brilliant, she was very calm, doing her breathing exercises. She gave birth in the front seat of the car, we had no time to move her.”

A paramedic was first on the scene and he cut the baby’s umbilical cord. An ambulance then transported Donna and Edward to hospital.

Before the couple left their home in Westbourne Road, they had called the hospital to say they were on their way.

David said: “When we arrived at Hinchingbrooke, we had to explain we already had a baby.

“My mother had warned us that we should hurry off to hospital and within minutes I rang her up to say she was a grandma again.

“We are delighted that everything went well and Edward is settling down to family life.”

David works for Halls Transport in Little Downham. He joked: “I am thinking we should add a slogan saying ‘no delivery too difficult’.”
