A SPATE of accidents caused mainly by black ice took its toll on Fenland and Cambridgeshire roads at the weekend.

This blue Rover 25 which ended up in a ditch alongside the road between Tipps End and Welney was one of many crashes attended to by the emergency services.

Cambridgeshire Police reported more than 40 accidents whilst paramedics said they had been called to more than 50 collisions across the region on Saturday.

Most serious accident in Cambridgeshire came after an eight-year-old boy died at Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge following a smash on the A14 at Quy in the early hours of Sunday.

He was named this morning (Monday) by police as Joel Depper, of Uplands Road, Sudbury, Suffolk.

The driver, a 41-year-old woman and a 7-year-old boy, both from Sudbury, suffered minor injuries and were taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

The pair were travelling in a maroon Mazda2 which left the road and collided with a tree.

Coldest spot in the country at the weekend was at Holbeach where the temperature fell to -15.6C overnight.
