The people of Benwick will be working around the clock to make sure the village is looking in top shape when the judges visit on July 14.

Volunteers met this week to scatter a mix of wildflowers and Flanders poppies in the old church yard as part of the continuing Centenary Poppy campaign. White roses will also be planted there.

Other plans include a colourful display by the entrance to the playground, with planting in the cottage garden style of the great British horticulturalist Gertrude Jekyll.

Nearby, the village’s Scout troop are creating a sensory garden, with a selection of highly scented plants that will attract bees and other insects.

Special projects are also being undertaken by children at Benwick Primary School and in gardens along Doddington Road.

Jill Hindle, who heads the village’s In Bloom group, said: “We are working very hard to get everything looking as good as we can again this year.

“We are keen to involve as many people in the community as possible because this is a very important part of our village life.”
